Romanian national held for ATM fraud
Kolkata: A Romanian national has been arrested from Greater Kailash in South Delhi for his involvement in alleged ATM frauds, which took place across Kolkata since past few months.
According to sources, since past few months several ATM frauds were reported in various police station in Kolkata.
In every case victims withdrew money from ATM counters. In some cases, victims tried withdrawing money but the transactions did not complete due to some technical snag.
While probing these cases, police found some CCTV footages and saw a few persons were behaved suspiciously inside ATM counters.
One of the suspect was looked like a foreigner. After scrutinising the CCTV footages, the police started listing of foreigners who had come to Kolkata, during the time when these incidents took place.
Police came to know about a Romanian national, identified as Siliviu Florin Spiridon, who made frequent visits to Delhi and Kolkata in the recent past.
It was also noticed that using the cards details, which were compromised, the accused persons had frequently withdrawn money.
Following the identification, police interrogated several Romanian nationals in Kolkata and came to know that their suspect was living somewhere in Greater Kailash.
Based on the information, a team from Detective Department went to Greater Kailash and started searching for Spiridon.
Earlier, it was noticed that the offenders had used a particular ATM of a nationalised bank there. While few police personnel were looking for the suspect in nearby houses, other Kolkata Police personnel with assistance from Delhi Police were keeping a strict vigil in and around the ATM counter.
On Monday evening around 5:15 pm, Spiridon came to withdraw money and police nabbed him.
Later, during interrogation he reportedly confessed to crime and disclosed that he had several other associates who helped him.
During the search of his rented premises, police recovered good number of skimming devices, accessories, magnetic chips, batteries, PIN hole cameras.
Search is on to nab his associates. Spiridon will be produced at the local court in Delhi with prayer for transit remand.
