Robbers loot woman, man at gun point near South City, four arrested

Kolkata: Armed robbers looted valuables from a woman and her companion in the wee hours of Friday near posh South City area in the southern part of Kolkata.

Four persons were arrested in connection with the incident. Initially police arrested Yousuf Ahamad and Arijit Singh, alias Gourav.

Yusuf is a resident of Kolkata but Arijit is originally from Jalpaiguri. Police recovered one country made single shotter gun from Arijit. After interrogating the duo, police arrested one 19-year-old youth identified as Ejaz Ahamad and Robin Ahamad in this connection.

Police initiated a case under different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on charges of "voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery" (394 IPC) and "robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt" (397 IPC).

Sources said the woman and her companion were passing through the area at around 2 am. Both of them were on foot and all of a sudden found two youths following them on a motorbike.

Both the woman and the man were scared as the youths stopped the bike just in front of them when they entered a narrow lane near South City. One of the youths held the woman at gun point and asked her to handover all her valuables. The situation turned worse as the man accompanying her raised an alarm.

One of the youths hit him on his head with the butt of a firearm. In such a situation, they managed to flee from the area after taking some valuables and the mobile phone from the woman.

Finding no other way out, the victims managed to report the entire incident to the police.

Police took immediate steps and alerted all its teams patrolling in and around the area.

The injured person was taken to MR Bangur Hospital where he was provided with necessary treatment, while cops initiated a search operation.

Police conducted raids at different places and finally detained two youths. They seized the motorbike the miscreants had and later picked up two more persons for their alleged involvement in the gang. Sources said police recovered one cartridge and one mobile from Yousuf Alam. One ladies purse containing Rs 300 and a debit card were also recovered from Robin.

Necessary steps are being taken to curb such incidents in the city.
