Rains likely in hot and humid Kolkata, relief expected

Kolkata's Regional Meteorological Centre indicated a spell of rain in the city on Thursday that will continue till Friday to Saturday.

The city recorded maximum 33.1 degrees Celsius and minimum 26.9 degrees Celsius temperature on Tuesday. No rainfall was traced till the past two, three days and Kolkattans experienced a sultry weather. But with this forecast, the temperature may drop certain notches at the end of this week, RMC predicted.

"This would be nothing but a nor'wester. Dark clouds would form before the rainfall," said a meteorologist. "People here are experiencing severe hot weather conditions. But the situation will change at the end of this week," he added.

It will be a cyclonic circulation in Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha in lower level. A trough would also be spotted moving across the circulation, he said.

It will be recalled that RMC had predicted that the situation would worsen as temperature could go up to 37 degrees Celsius till April 10.

"We are waiting for nor'wester to come. It is really good news," said a Salt Lake resident.

"Such heat wave is really surprising during this time of the year. But the nights are really good now and there is a pleasant breeze," she added.

Cloudy sky would be seen in Gangetic and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal region. Rain and thundershowers could be observed in North Bengal, meteorologist predicted.

The trough will persist close to West Assam. The trough is supposed to originate from Arunachal Pradesh and will probably go up to Digha and then Odisha.

However, the intermittent rainfall was reported in many districts from Gangetic Bengal and North Bengal respectively on Wednesday.
