Rain may dampen spirit of Kolkatans during Puja

Kolkata: Revellers may get drenched while visiting Durga Puja pandals this year as the Regional Meteorological Centre predicted that it may drizzle in Kolkata and other South Bengal districts.

A senior official of the Alipore Met office on Monday said that a low pressure trough that has formed over Bay-of-Bengal may further intensify in the next few days. A cyclonic circulation may be created due to the impact of a strong depression. As a strong wind may be sweeping through the various South Bengal districts, the fishermen in the coastal districts have been asked not to voyage into the sea. Restrictions have been imposed for four days from Tuesday.

According to the weather office, the low pressure trough will further intensify from Wednesday, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall in various South Bengal districts including North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Burdwan, Murshidabad, Nadia, East Midnapore and West Midnapore, between October 10 and 12.

The city will also receive moderate rainfall during this period. The low pressure trough may move towards Odisha after October 12, as a result of which the intensity of rainfall will be reduced. However, the cyclonic circulation may hit the South Bengal districts.

"A low pressure trough that has formed over Bay-of-Bengal may be strengthened in the next 48 hours, bringing heavy rainfall in some districts of South Bengal from October 10-12. The situation may improve later as the low pressure trough will move towards Odisha," an official from the weather office said.

He also added that a strong wind measuring around 60-80 km/h is expected to hit the South Bengal districts in the next 48 hours. The fishermen in the coastal districts have been alerted. The sea will remain turbulent due to the low pressure and cyclonic circulation.

It may be mentioned here that the state government has already issued an alert to the coastal districts in the wake of the prediction of a cyclonic circulation in the state. The Southwest monsoon has officially departed from the city but a low pressure trough on Bay-of-Bengal ahead of Durga Puja has left the city dwellers anxious.
