Purulia administration looks into traders', shopkeepers' refusal to accept 10 rupee coins

The district administration and district police of Purulia learnt that Rs 10 coins were not being accepted in some parts of the district.

The small traders to big shopkeepers were refusing to take the Rs 10 coins because they believe that those coins are fake.

The district administration and police are probing the matter.

It may be mentioned that the RBI earlier had said that the coins of Rs 10 denomination with rupee symbol and without rupee symbol are legal tender and equally good for transactions, though they may look a little different.

The RBI statement in the wake of reports said that some less-informed people who suspected the genuineness of such coins were creating confusion in the minds of ordinary people, including traders and shop-keepers.

Some faulty media reports were also responsible for the unrest due to the fake coin issue.

But the issue has been long solved as 10 rupee coins were started to except by the people. Purulia's incident raised the eyebrows of the state administration and police.

The police were informed that no traders, shopkeepers were taking 10 rupee coins from customers.

The bus conductors were also not taking Rs 10 coins from passengers.

Some local residents also alleged that some banks did not accept the coins as well when common people had gone there deposit the Rs 10 coins.

The Reserve Bank advised common people not to give importance to such ill-informed notions and continue accepting these coins as legal tender in all their transactions without any hesitation.
