Protesting alcohol consumption: 4 thrashed in three cases

In three separate incidents at Salt Lake, Dum Dum Cantonment and Gayeshpur, four persons including a woman were critically injured after some inebriated men beat them up. The common link between all the incidents was that the victims had protested liquor consumption in the open. The infuriated drunkards then attacked the victims and assaulted them. They were taken to the hospitals where some of them are still admitted.

In Salt Lake, a couple protested the drinking of alcohol in the open on Saturday night at Sukantanagar's Trinathpalli, just beside the prime part of the Salt Lake.

The man went there to protest but the drunkards overpowered him and beat him up. His wife tried to rescue him but she was beaten up as well as molested.

Late at the night, the couple went to police station to lodge an FIR. The police received complaints against four or five persons. No one, though, were arrested. Police also received the complaints that those people were regularly consumed liquor in that area. They even teased women passing by the road.

In another incident at North 24 Parganas' Dum Dum Cantonment, a local youth was beaten up by some drunkards. Rakesh Mukherjee, the youth, received injuries on many parts of his body.

The local women poured out onto the streets, protesting against the incident and demanded the arrest of accused persons.

In Nadia's Gayeshpur, a similar incident took place on Saturday night. Bablu Dey, a BSF jawan, was beaten up by some drunkards while he protested open drinking on the field.

Five or six drunkards overpowered him and one of them hit him from behind. He was taken to the hospital. The police started an investigation in the case as well. However, no culprits were arrested.
