'Probe into graft can only be ordered after univ approaches govt'

State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee will order a probe to unearth the corruption cases at West Bengal State University but only after the university authority approaches him over corruption issues.

The minister said that every university has an autonomy. The state government will not intervene in their internal affairs till they inform the matter to the government.

But corruption related to financial irregularities and misadministration were reported from several universities.

"I know that there are many financial irregularities and corruption cases reported from some universities. The government usually does not intervene in such matters. But how can we tolerate such misdeeds? But at the same time, we should not intervene into their autonomy," Chatterjee said on Friday, while he was asked about the alleged administrative corruption while admitting B Ed students at the West Bengal State University.

However, the Vice-Chancellor of West Bengal State University Basab Choudhuri said, he was informed about what the Education minister has said on Friday. The university has already informed the police and an FIR has been registered for the same and now, the cops will take necessary action.

"The students are now coming to the university with fake B Ed marksheets. They are alleging that the marksheets which they were given from here, were fake. I believe, such misdeeds took place between 2012 and 2014, much before I joined," said Choudhuri, while talking with Millennium Post.

According to a university source, most of the students from Anil Krishna Mahavidyalaya, under this university got fake B Ed marksheets. Assistant Controller Subrata Sarkar and the representatives of Anil Krishna Mahavidyalaya, Gopal Mondal, were allegedly involved in the racket, said the Vice-Chancellor of West Bengal State University.

The minister said that to address the irregularities in educational institutes, a Bill has been passed which is still awaited to turn into an Act. After the Act comes to play, the government, on cases where it feels that an educational institute is taking part in some irregularity, can intervene.
