The Registrar of Presidency University Debajyoti Konar was gheraod by a section of student on Tuesday morning over various demands. The protesting students alleged that they were compelled to take that step after the repeated refusal on behalf of the university administration to accede to their demands. However, the gherao was lifted late in the night.
The students demanded the change of some rules regarding the admission test of the university. They demanded that the closing of the portal for the admission test must be kept open for at least another week. They also demanded that a number of subjects for which an applicant may apply must be increased to three for graduation level admission test and to more than one for the Master Degree level admission test.
"Earlier, we demanded that the candidates should have options of taking the admission test in English and Bengali. The number of examination centres for the admission tests should also be increased. The university administration cooperated with us with those issues," said a protesting student.
But the students alleged that the discrepancies in the admission test protocol still remained. The students would continue to protest until demands were met, in the interests of all the applicants to Presidency University.
The Registrar, however, said that they would inform the matter to Joint Entrance Board which conducted the admission test for Presidency University. However in a different incident, Dalit Jagaran Manch, an organisation which was constituted by some students of Jadavpur University, submitted a deputation to the Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das on Tuesday demanding action against a university employee. In another incident, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, Ashutosh Ghosh, was also gheraod by a section of students on Tuesday evening demanding the release of result of M Phil (Bengali).
