Post Sachin escape, Safari Park adopts host of measures

Darjeeling: Thousands thronged to the Bengal Safari Park on Saturday to catch a glimpse of Sachin, the leopard that had made headlines with his escape.

Binay Krishna Barman, the state Forest minister, also visited the park to check on Sachin's well-being. Sachin, an adult leopard, had escaped from the enclosure at Bengal Safari Park near Siliguri on Tuesday morning. A massive search operation had been launched to locate Sachin. However, the leopard had returned on his own to his enclosure on Friday evening.

"We all are very happy that Sachin has returned and that there has been no major incident. Sachin is in good health and spirits. He has some injuries which will heal. We have decided to adopt certain measures on the wake of Sachin's escape," stated Barman.

CCTVs will be installed and the power fencing will be strengthened. "All the staff of the Safari Park are temporary. This Park is the Chief Minister's dream project. We had sent a note to the Chief Minister requesting for permanent staff. It has got a nod from the finance department and the Cabinet," added the minister. One Ranger, two Foresters and 10 Forest Guards will be stationed as permanent staff at the Park.

The authorities have decided to strengthen the power fencing but feel the height is adequate.

"The fencing has been built as per the prescribed specifications (height and design) by the Central Zoo Authority and has been approved by the CZA," stated Rajendra Jakhar, acting director of the Safari Park.

The power fence has more than 7000 Watts running through it. However, Sachin had not come in contact with the fence as he had jumped across it from a tall tree.

A survey has been started and trees along the fences will be trimmed. "We will release Sachin in the display area as soon as he is completely cured," added the director.
