Police up ante to prevent any untoward incident during Dol & Holi
Kolkata: Kolkata Police has made necessary security arrangements for Dol Jatra and Holi being celebrated on Monday and Tuesday and vigil across the city has also been intensified from Sunday.
Naka checking and block chain raids to control errant drivers started from Saturday night. According to sources, from Sunday afternoon, vigilance in vulnerable areas have also started. Mobile patrolling vans with adequate number of police personnel have been deployed and instructed to patrol frequently in all the divisions. This apart, anti-crime teams from Lalbazar have already started patrolling across the city.
According to Kolkata Police officials during the festival of colours, approximately 4,000 police personnel will be deployed. On Monday 700 police pickets will be set up across the city. The majority of these pickets will be in vulnerable areas from where complaints were received last year. On Tuesday, there will be 500 police pickets across the city. This apart, 25 Heavy Radio Flying Squads (HRFS) will be stationed in strategic points, from where they would be moved when necessary. Senior officials will patrol the city in order to supervise the security arrangements. Multiple mobile patrolling vans in each division and Quick Response Teams (QRT) will be in strategic points across the city.
The women teams of Kolkata Police, popularly known as 'The Winners', will also patrol the city along with 'Shakti' teams. Joint Commissioner of Police (Jt. CP), Headquarters, Subhankar Sinha Sarkar said that people are being requested not to throw colour on any person forcefully. Residents of high-rise buildings have been asked not to throw colour balloons from the rooftop. "If any person is found disobeying the orders by police, he/she will face legal consequences. Apart from security arrangements, police have already intensified the naka checking and block chain raids since Saturday night. During the raid, 1,834 two-wheeler riders were held for carrying more than two persons, riding without helmet and other traffic rule violations. 134 car and two-wheeler drivers have been prosecuted for rash driving and 33 persons have been arrested for driving in a drunken condition. Also, 12 vehicles have been seized for not producing valid documents.
Meanwhile on Sunday, Kolkata Police has taken an initiative of informing women commuters about how to act in case of any danger or how to seek police help. At several points across the city, women police personnel have distributed leaflets, where details of the same have been mentioned.
