Police to ensure people follow SC directive on firecrackers

Kolkata: All steps and measures have been taken to ensure that people follow the order of the Supreme Court in terms of the bursting of firecrackers.

The Apex Court has directed that firecrackers can be burst for only two hours.

On Tuesday, the Kolkata Police have tweeted to make people aware that firecrackers may be allowed "only between 8 and 10 at night".

Besides creating awareness among people, the police will be maintaining a vigil to ensure that the order of the Supreme Court is followed.

The cops have also made people aware about the same by using public addressing system at different places.

A rally was also organised at Bansdroni to make people aware of "the devastating effects of sound pollution caused by fireworks on animals".

Locals participated in the rally along with their pets and urged everyone not to burst firecrackers that will leave an adverse effect on pets.

In many instances, it has been found that pets suffer from cardiac arrest due to sound of firecrackers. It may be mentioned that Commissioner of Kolkata Police, Rajeev Kumar had tweeted on November 3 urging people to "celebrate responsibly!" so that pets do not fall victim to bursting of firecrackers.

The police have also taken various initiatives to check bursting of banned firecrackers. The police also created awareness among residents of different residential complexes in the city. They have been urged not to burst banned firecrackers on terraces. The residents have assured all support to the police in this connection.

Policemen will be keeping a close watch at the situation in their respective areas and would take necessary steps if anyone is found bursting banned firecrackers.
