Kolkata: Tension broke out in Asansol on Tuesday during a law violation programme of CPI(M).
The CPI(M) supporters jostled with police when the latter tried to stop the former from marching ahead.
It also led to massive traffic congestion in the area and commuters were harassed as they failed to reach their destinations on time.
The supporters started marching from Asansol BNR and they were stopped near the office of sub-divisional officer. Police set up security barricades near Ghorir More in Asansol Court area.
The supporters attempted to break the security barricades as a part of their law violation programme. Cops stopped them from breaking the security barricades and it led to jostle between the police and party supporters.
The incident led to massive traffic congestion in the area leading to harassment of common people. There were long queues of buses and other vehicles on major
thoroughfares.
People had to walk long distances to get some alternate mode of transport to reach their destinations.
