Patient's kin assault police offical at MR Bangur Hospital

Kolkata: Relatives of a patient allegedly roughed up a policeman on MR Bangur Hospital campus after the latter denied their entry into the male ward on Sunday afternoon.

The incident led to huge deployment of police forces on the hospital campus. A police official was injured in the incident.

The police said Rohit Yadav, a resident of New Alipore, had been admitted to the hospital a few days ago. The family members had reached the hospital to take the patient back home on Sunday morning.

During the process of getting discharged from the hospital, family members of the patient tried to forcibly enter the male ward. Sanjiv Bhowmik (36), a resident of Tollygunge Road started fighting with security guards deployed at the entrance gate of the emergency ward.

Bhowmik's wife Bula and their son Rahul Bhowmik also got involved in the scuffle with the police. Sanjib Bhowmik and his wife Bula Bhowmik have been arrested and a case has been lodged at Jadavpur police station in this connection.

Some of the hospital staff members said around 1.30 pm 30 people gathered outside the emergency ward of the hospital and tried to enter the hospital forcibly.

As they tried to forcibly enter into the male ward, the on-duty police personnel told them they would not allow more than two persons. The family members of the patient then resorted to violence. The incident soon turned ugly as the irate mob roughed up a policeman and tore his uniform.

The incident created tension among the patients and their family members at the hospital. The matter was informed to the local police station.

A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and dispersed the mob. The situation was soon brought under control.

A police picket was set up outside the emergency ward. The police have started a detailed probe into the incident. The patient is a resident of New Alipore, police said.

In another incident a 5-year-old boy, Shreyan Mondal, a resident of Matigara in Siliguri died of alleged medical negligence at a private hospital in the area.

The family members of the victim on Sunday went on rampage ransacking a portion of the private hospital. Family members alleged that the victim died due to lack of proper treatment.

The victim was admitted to the hospital after he was hit by a tractor on October 29.

The patient died at the hospital on Sunday morning. Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
