Partha points out massive development brought in Education sector since 2011

Kolkata: State Education minister Partha Chatterjee spoke about the massive development in the education sector since the Mamata Banerjee government assumed power for the first time in 2011.

Chatterjee delivered his address on the Budget for the department of Higher Education and School Education at the state Assembly on Monday.

He said that the number of primary, upper primary as well as secondary and higher secondary schools have gone up since 2011. The recruitment of teachers has also been made, keeping parity with the new schools that have come up.

In 2010-11 the number of primary schools was 39,603, which has gone up to 50,156 in 2018-19. Similarly, the number of upper primary schools has increased from 2,907 to 4,793 while the secondary and higher secondary schools have risen to 8,901 from 8,363.

"We have upgraded a number of schools to higher secondary level and in 2019 alone, 179 schools have witnessed such infrastructural development," Chatterjee said.

The number of teachers in the primary level has gone up from 1,90,740 in 2011 to 2,14,670 in 2019, while the number of upper primary, secondary and higher secondary teachers has gone up to 2,18,927 from 1,92,186. The total number of teachers in 2019 stands at 4,33,517, up from 3,82,980.

"The student-teacher ratio in upper primary stands at 41:1 compared to 48:1 in 2011, while that in higher secondary stands at 45:1 down from 55:1 in 2011," he added.

Chatterjee pointed out that the pass percentage of Madhyamik examination has also increased from 80.57 percent in 2011 to 86.07 percent in 2019.

The minister added that he will also send the proposal of including "Letters from a Father to His Daughter," in the school curriculum to the Syllabus Committee, for taking a decision in this regard.

This is a collection of 30 letters written by Jawaharlal Nehru to his daughter Indira Gandhi in the summer of 1928, when she was 10-years-old. The proposal came from an MLA during discussion on the budget statement.
