Overhead water reservoir collapses in Salt Lake
Kolkata: An overhead water reservoir inside the Post and Telegraph (P&T) housing complex in Salt Lake has collapsed on Thursday morning. It has been alleged that the buildings and the reservoir were not maintained properly for a long time.
According to locals, on Thursday at around 9 am, one of the two overhead water reservoirs collapsed suddenly. Hearing the sound of the mishap, residents of the housing complex came out and saw the debris. A major accident was averted, however, as no one was close to the reservoir at the time.
Police and fire brigade were informed and state Fire minister Sujit Bose and Mayor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Krishna Chakraborty later went to the spot.
Residents of the housing alleged that though BSNL and P&T department were tasked with maintaining the housing, nothing has been done for a long time.
Local councillor Tulsi Sinha Roy alleged that the reservoir, which collapsed on Thursday, has not been maintained in the past 30 years.
Bose later got in touch with BSNL along with P&T officials and requested them to take necessary steps. Meanwhile, BMC has sent four water tankers to the housing to tackle any possible shortage of water.
