Over 57,000 mouths fed in Diamond Harbour thanks to Abhishek's initiative
Kolkata: More than 57,000 people living in the areas under Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency were given cooked food on the inaugural day of the Kalpataru project.
The project has been undertaken by Abhishek Banerjee, president of All India Trinamool Youth Congress and local MP.
Banerjee tweeted: "With almost 60k+ requests in the last three days, I am pleased to announce that Kalpataru has been able to deliver 57,855 meals on the very first day. Personally, there is no greater sense of fulfillment for a public representative than to support the distressed in their hour of need."
Banerjee had decided to give cooked food to the residents who live in the areas under seven Assembly constituencies that make up the Diamond Harbour Parliamentary seat. The Assembly segments are Diamond Harbour, Palta, Satgachia, Bishnupur, Maheshtala, Budge Budge and Metiabruz.
21 community kitchens were set up to prepare the food. The menu included rice, egg curry and potato curry. The food was packed in sanitised containers and delivered to those who had registered themselves. The cooks, helpers and party workers who distributed the food to individual households were sanitised as well.
Those who were present in the kitchens maintained one meter distance from each other. They wore masks and washed their hands before touching the packets. Cooked food was distributed among 57,855 people, the highest by any MP in Bengal.
Cooking was carried out at the community kitchens on a war footing from early Sunday morning. The food packets were distributed between 11 am and 11.30 am. The arrangements were so impeccable that every person who had registered their name got food packets.
Earlier, those who needed the food registered their names by calling up 033-40876262. The registration started on April 9. Those who received the food thanked Banerjee and no party colour was taken into consideration while distributing the same.
The MP had earlier given ration to the people that contained rice, pulses, potato, onion, edible oil and packets of biscuits. Masks and hand sanitisers were also given along with four posters carrying the dos and don'ts to fight against COVID-19. Banerjee had urged people through social media not to panic and put up a united fight against the disease.
