Over 1,000 held for disorderly conduct during Dol, Holi
Kolkata: More than 1,000 people have been arrested on Monday and Tuesday across the city for disorderly conduct while celebrating Dol Jatra and Holi.
According to police, 656 persons were arrested and 340 litres of liquor was seized on Monday. The maximum number of arrests was in the South Suburban Division on the day of Dol Jatra. On Tuesday, 117 persons were arrested for disorderly conduct, out of which 52 persons were arrested from the North Division of Kolkata Police.
Apart from this, traffic police had kept strict vigil on the streets to stop errant two-wheeler riders and drivers. During the naka checking and block chain raids, 18 persons were arrested for driving in drunken condition.
More than 600 persons have been prosecuted for not wearing helmets while 50 persons have been penalised for driving dangerously. To maintain law and order and put a leash on errant drivers, approximately 4,000 police personnel were deployed during the two-day festival of colours.
This apart, 25 Heavy Radio Flying Squads (HRFS) were stationed at strategic points. Senior officials had supervised the whole arrangement and patrolled the city throughout Monday and Tuesday.
Multiple mobile patrolling vans in each division and Quick Response Teams were also deployed in order to avoid any untoward incident. The women teams of Kolkata Police, popularly known as 'The Winners', also patrolled the city along with 'Shakti' teams.
