Organs of brain dead patient to give fresh lease of life to 5

Kolkata: Organs of a brain dead patient at a private hospital in Alipore is expected to give fresh lease of life to five patients lodged at different government and private hospitals in the city.

Kolkata Police had created a Green Corridor for shifting three of the patient's organs on Thursday that included his heart, liver and a kidney.

The donor, Sajal Kar, was grievously injured in an accident after he skidded with his motorcycle on a slippery road at Kolaghat in East Midnapore on Monday night. The 20-year-old, a student of BCom first year, was at first taken to nearby Tamluk hospital and was later transferred to a private hospital

in Alipore.

The youth succumbed to his injuries at the private hospital on Wednesday evening following which his family members decided to donate his organs.

Kolkata Police created a Green Corridor in the morning to carry Kar's liver to SSKM hospital for transplantation. The victim's heart was transported through the Green Corridor to Calcutta Medical College Hospital which was transplanted on one Habibur Rehman, a resident of Murshidabad. One of the kidneys was transplanted on a patient at the Alipore hospital itself, while another was carried to a private hospital at Phoolbagan for transplantation on one Joypratim Ghosh of Baruipur.

Kar's skin and cornea have also been preserved for transplantation. The skin transplant is expected to take place at SSKM hospital, while the cornea will be donated to a noted eye hospital in Salt Lake.

Sajal's family members informed that he was a student of Bagnan College in Howrah and hailed from Mahisda area in Kolaghat.

The accident took place while he was travelling from Mecheda to Haldia with one of his friends riding pillion.

It was raining and the motorbike suddenly skidded, resulting in serious injuries in his head and chest. He died on Wednesday evening.

"We are heart broken at his sudden demise. But we have a sense of relief that he has given a fresh lease of life to five people," Sajal's uncle said.
