Organ donation: 25-yr-old gives fresh lease of life to 3

Kolkata: A 25-year-old, who died at a private hospital in Dhakuria on Wednesday, gave a fresh lease of life to three patients – one of whom was admitted to a private hospital near Mukundapur on EM Bypass while the other two to SSKM hospital.

The private hospital at Dhakuria facilitated the process of transplant of critical organs of Debolina Ghosh, who was brain-dead for a while. Kolkata Police created a Green-Corridor to ensure that her two kidneys and the heart can be whisked away to its desired locations at its earliest.

A resident of Berhampore, Tanaya Pandit received Debolina's heart. The 45-year old Anita Ghosh, a resident of Dhaniakhali in Hooghly, became the recipient of one of Debolina's kidney.

Ghosh was suffering from kidney problem since January 2018 and undergoing treatment at SSKM hospital.

Debolina's another kidney was given to Keya Dan, a resident of Pandua in Hooghly.

She is only 21-year-old. Both the patients were stable according to hospital sources.

Kuber Dan, father of Keya said: "I am indebted to Debolina's family for giving a fresh lease of life to my daughter. I offer my sincere respect to her family.

Joyprotim Ghosh, a resident of Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas suffering from liver cirrhosis since 2014 was scheduled to receive Debolina's liver but after the organ was found to be damaged due to some complications and the transplantation could not take place.

Her eyes were taken to Shankar Netralaya.

Debolina was admitted to AMRI Hospital-Dhakuria on November 4 in an unconscious state and was shifted to ITU for life support. A CT scan of her brain showed she suffered from acute hydrocephalus.

Despite many attempts, her sensorium did not improve and she was declared clinically brain dead on Wednesday at around 6:30 pm. Debolina was suffering from

cerebral palsy.

Rupak Barua, Group CEO of AMRI Hospitals, said: "Debolina passed away and she was declared brain dead. We were communicating regularly with the family members and they were also looking at options on what to do. Dr SK Todi, the head of our trauma care unit, along with our consultants also counselled them on various aspects of organ donation. After our internal committee finally declared her brain dead, Debolina's parents expressed their willingness to go ahead with the donations and we started the process."
