One killed after car rams into tree

A 33-year-old man was killed in a road accident when his car fell into a ditch after hitting a tree on Basanti Highway on Friday morning. Police said the victim Utsav Agarwal was a resident of Baikuntha Chatterjee Road in Howrah. Police came to know from people who witnessed the incident that the car was heading towards Basanti in South 24 Parganas and it was at a high speed when the accident took place. There are many sharp turns on Basanti Highway. Utsav, who was himself driving the car, failed to control the vehicle's speed and hit against a tree. It fell into a road side ditch after colliding against the tree. The police went to the spot and took necessary measures to bring the car out of the ditch. Additional policemen from Tiljala Traffic Guard went to the spot and the car was brought out of the ditch.
The police found Utsav in the driver's seat with the seat belt on inside the car. They took him to National Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The police identified him after going through the documents found from him. The accident led to traffic
congestion in the area as hundreds of people gathered to watch the rescue operation going on. It may be mentioned that the road is one of the major thoroughfares connecting the city with Basanti. As a result, there is always heavy movement of traffic on the road. But often accidents take place here as it is too narrow. The police and engineers had recommended that widening of the road is the only way out to check road accidents. Finally, the Mamata Banerjee-government is taking necessary steps to widen the road.
