According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the accident might have occurred due to poor visibility. They have started a detailed probe in this regard. Police are interrogating the driver of the car and the passengers to find out the cause of the accident.
In another accident, a cyclist sustained critical injuries after being knocked down by a speeding police jeep. The incident led to agitation by some local residents who blamed that the police vehicle was running at high speed when it hit the victim. It took place at Rajbari area of the same district.
Local residents alleged that a civic volunteer was travelling in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Instead of taking the injured victim to a hospital, the accused civic volunteer fled from the spot, along with the vehicle.
Another police vehicle later took the victim to the Jalpaiguri Superspeciality Hospital where he has been undergoing treatment with serious injuries. His condition is stated to be serious. Local residents staged a demonstration at the accident site, which was later lifted following the intervention of the senior police officers.
