One killed, 2 injured after auto overturns on Ultadanga flyover
KOLKATA: A passenger of an auto-rickshaw was killed after it overturned on Ultandanga flyover on Wednesday afternoon. The driver managed to flee the spot after the incident. Police suspect that the driver of the auto was in an inebriated state.
Police sources informed three persons boarded the auto from Bengal Chemical off Eastern Metropolitan Bypass (E M Bypass) to go to Lake Town around 2:30 pm on Wednesday. Despite there being no auto route on E M Bypass, the driver went using the road. It was alleged that he was driving rashly. Though the passengers asked him to drive properly, he did not bother. All of a sudden the driver took the auto on Ultadanga flyover.
The passengers alleged that they had asked him not to take the flyover but the driver kept going. Near a sharp right bend, he lost control over the auto and hit the guard wall of the flyover. Due to the impact one of the passengers identified as Swapan Basu (53) fell out of the seat and the vehicle fell over him. The driver also fell out breaking the windscreen.
Lake Town traffic guard was informed. When people were busy with the injured persons, the driver managed to flee the accident spot leaving the auto there. Police recovered the injured three persons and rushed them to a nursing home in Lake Town where Basu was declared brought dead.
