One held from Jadavpur for duping people
Kolkata: A floor-manager of a call centre was arrested from Jadavpur area on charges of cheating people from different states under the pretext of assuring valuable gifts.
Police said the arrested person, Md Firdous, is originally a resident of Naihati in North 24-Parganas. Police had arrested him on Monday from NS Bose Road at Jadavpur in South Kolkata.
Sources said the preliminary investigation has revealed some more people used to work under Firdous and police are checking their activities.
Police came to know that Firdous and others in his team used to contact people posing as customer care executives from different online shopping portals and e-wallet apps.
They used to tell people that they have won lotteries and are eligible to get valuable gifts.
Once the person starts relying on them, they were asked to deposit a sum of money in a bank account as a registration or processing fee to get the gift.
They had contacted residents of different states including Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.
But the matter came to light after some people lodged complaints with the police. Police initiated a probe and arrested Firdous who has been remanded to police custody till October 10.
