One arrested in connection with Maidan murder
Kolkata: A person identified as Md Alamgir has been arrested by Maidan police station for murdering a woman at Rugby Ground on February 12.
Police had found the body of a street-dwelling woman on the morning of February 12 at Rugby Ground. The face of the woman had been smashed using some heavy object. A bag containing some clothes was also found near the body. Sleuths had also found traces of blood on a log lying beside the body, which indicated towards murder.
The homicide section of the Detective Department (DD) was also informed. Forensic examination of the objects found there was also done. During the probe, sleuths interrogated several street-dwellers in the area and came to know that Alamgir had some relation with the deceased. But he had vanished since the woman's death. This led to suspicion among the sleuths.
Meanwhile, sleuths got hold of a sketch which was drawn on the basis of statements by other street-dwellers. To nab Alamgir, the sketch was circulated among the sources. Two days ago, police got a tip-off that Alamgir was seen in the Ganesh Chandra Avenue area.
Immediately, police initiated a search operation there but failed to locate him. On Wednesday, sleuths came to know about his location again from a source. They rushed there immediately and arrested Alamgir.
Later, during interrogation, Alamgir admitted that he had killed the woman. He also informed that he had an intimate relation with her for a long time. But recently, the woman got involved in another relation with another street-dweller. Despite warnings, she did not pay heed to him, which led him to commit the crime.
