'NRC panic' claims two lives in Bengal
Kolkata: Two separate incidents of mysterious death have occurred in the state, with local residents claiming that the fear of being driven out of the country due to NRC was the probable cause.
The NRC fear continues to loom large in the districts after some people failed to arrange various documents related to the issue. An elderly man from Basirhat's Sashan, identified as Ayub Ali, has committed suicide in the fear of being driven out of the country, after implementation of NRC.
The local residents said that the victim had been visiting the local BDO's office for some documentation work, but failed to get some papers which he thought were essential for NRC.
The family members said that Ali went to the BDO's office on Saturday as well. He had repeatedly told his neighbours that he would be asked to leave the country after the NRC comes into force.
The panic stricken man suffered a massive heart attack on Saturday night and was eventually declared brought dead by the doctors at a nearby hospital. The family members claimed that the threat of NRC claimed his life. The reason of his death is yet to be confirmed officially.
In a similar incident, Kalachand Midhe (42), a resident of Falta in South 24-Parganas, was found hanging from a tree inside a mango grove in his locality. The incident triggered tension among the local residents on Sunday morning.
His family members and local residents claimed that he committed suicide after becoming apprehensive that his name would feature in the NRC list. His family members later identified the body.
Midhe had been absconding since Saturday morning. Police have started an investigation to ascertain the cause of his death.
