Notorious criminal from Howrah shot dead
Kolkata: A notorious criminal identified as Rammurty, alias Ramua, has been shot dead by some miscreants on Sunday night at Amarabati in Sodepur.
According to locals, about five to six miscreants carrying firearms had entered Ramua's flat on Sunday night around 1 am. He had been living there for the last few months.
It is alleged that the miscreants held Ramua's son on Gunpoint after he opened the door. When Ramua was about to make some move, the miscreants fired multiple rounds of bullet aiming Ramua from point blank range. As soon as he fell on the ground, the miscreants fled the scene.
On hearing the sounds of bullets being fired, locals went to the flat and found Ramua lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately rushed to Panihati State General Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. It is also alleged that Ramua tried to fire with his 9 mm pistol before he was shot. However, one of the miscreants managed to snatch away the pistol from him.
Ramua was a notorious criminal in the Central Howrah area. He was accused in around 30 cases of murder, extortion, illegal firearms in Howrah. He was arrested on several occasions.
According to local sources, in the mid 90's Ramua had managed to spread terror in the Shibpur area. He used to torture his victims before killing them. A few years ago, Ramua had killed a youth in Howrah and severed his head, hands and legs. Later, he kicked the head as a football.
He was arrested and put in judicial custody. During sometime in November, 2018, Ramua was granted bail and was given a condition to not enter Howrah under any circumstances without court's permission.
The sleuths suspect that Ramua was trying to leave behind his past and trying to restore normalcy in life. As a result, his gang members might have killed him.
It is also suspected that Ramua was killed by the members of his rival gang from Howrah. Police are almost sure that the miscreants hailed from Howrah and were known to Ramua.
Though police are focusing on Ramua's gang members and the rival gang members, his wife and family members are also under the scanner.
"A murder case has been initiated and a probe is on to nab the culprits," said Ananda Roy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-II), Barrackpore Police. The sleuths also suspect that Ramua had taken the flat on rent in the Amarabati area and the flat owner did not submit any intimation regarding his tenancy to the police. It is suspected that Ramua was trying to hide as he might have suspected a sudden attack on him and thus had kept an illegal pistol with him.
