Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee calls up CM, lauds state govt's measures against pandemic

Kolkata: Hailing the measures taken by the state government to check the spread of COVID-19, Nobel laureate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee expressed his willingness to join the awareness campaign launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

He called up the Chief Minister on Saturday afternoon and informed her about his willingness to participate along with his wife Nobel laureate Esther Duflo considering it as is one of the most crucial moves to check the spread of the virus.

He told the Chief Minister that discipline and constant awareness is required to fight against the pandemic.

On January 28 this year, Banerjee had met the Chief Minister at Nabanna and expressed his willingness to work with the Bengal government.

He had then stated: "They (state government) have asked me to work with them. There are many interesting schemes in the state... I had come to listen to the Chief Minister and I learnt about the things that are being done here. Now, I will learn and study. I have always been a learner and it's not expected that suddenly I'll become an expert."
