No impact of cyclonic storm Pabuk in state: MeT

Kolkata: Tropical cyclone Pabuk which is expected to cross Andaman Sea on Sunday will hardly have any major impact on the state except some gushes of wind sweeping through some of the South Bengal districts.

While the Odisha government has put some of its districts on alert, the Bengal government has not issued any such notification so far in this connection. The Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore predicted that the cyclone will have no major impact on the weather system in the state. Some South Bengal districts may witness strong winds with a speed ranging between 40 and 50 km per hour.

The temperature in the city may hover around 12 degree Celsius in the next few days while the adjoining districts may see a little dip in the mercury. The weather office also predicted lesser chances of cold wave condition in various South Bengal districts.

However, the weather office said the sudden rise and fall in the temperature is quite common during this period.

"Heavy rains are expected in Andaman and Nicobar Islands from January 6-7 due to the impact of approaching tropical cyclone Pabuk which is likely to cross the islands on January 6. "According to available information, it may pass through Andaman Islands on the evening of January 6," a weather expert in the city said.

It may be mentioned that Pabuk originated over the Gulf of Thailand and its neighbourhood. Sea condition may be rough over Nicobar Islands till January 7. Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the Andaman Sea.

The weather office also maintained that some of the North Bengal districts may receive light rainfall on Sunday. There is also a prediction that various places in neighbouring Sikkim may receive snow fall in the next few days.
