No compensation for Kanjilal: Probe report

Kolkata: No compensation will be given by the Kolkata Metro Railway in connection with the Sajal Kanjilal case.

The 66-year-old had died in a tragic accident at the Park Street Metro station in July this year.

He had boarded a crowded coach and was dragged a few hundred metres with his right hand fingers wedged between the coaches. While Kanjilal's family members demanded that the Metro officials should provide a job as compensation, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) conducted a thorough investigation.

According to sources, the CRS found that Kanjilal died due to his own negligence.

While Kanjilal's death has become the first such incident in Kolkata Metro's history, the CRS had instructed the Kolkata Metro Railway authorities to install convex mirrors at the driving motorman's end at both the platforms in all the stations to avoid such incidents.

In August, in a bid to train officials to evacuate passengers during emergencies, the Kolkata Metro Railway officials conducted a mock drill on evacuation. The drill was conducted in a tunnel on the Down line between Rabindra Sarobar and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar Metro stations.
