NKDA chalks out scheme to reach zero solid waste goal

New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has chalked out a scheme to reach zero solid waste goal in two gated communities of New Town.
The scheme has been taken up as a pilot project as a part of the Green City Mission.

The pilot project will be launched in two housing complexes — Greenwood Sonata near City Centre II and Sukhobristi in Action Area III (AAIII).

A high-level meeting was held between senior NKDA officials and NGOs and representatives of these two housing complexes. The project will look to create compost through compost machines for food waste and other wet waste and recycle them. A waste audit in these two housing complexes will also be done.

NKDA has already taken up several schemes under the Green City Mission of which recycling of waste water is very important.

The recycled waste water is being used to water road side plantation. Steps have also been taken to recycle waste water in housing complexes and use the recycled water for gardening. This will help save filtered water. It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wanted New Town to grow as a green city and not a smart city though it had received the tag from the Centre. New Town's green cover has been increased and during Banmohotsav, state minister for Urban Development department Firhad Hakim had planted 40,000 saplings over a span of 15 days last year.

A tall tree nursery has been set up and census is on to study their growth. The housing complexes that had planted saplings in 2016 will be rewarded this year based on their maintenance.
