Nine-month-old baby dumped by mother, recovered

Kolkata: A woman had thrown her nine-month-old son at a garbage dump late on Friday night over some family related problems. Some locals heard a child's cry and found nine month old Md Ali from the garbage.

Locals identified the mother as one named Mumtaz. A few months ago, her husband Tanvir alleged that she had cut off his ear. Sources informed that locals approached an area filled with garbage after they heard child's cry from there on late Friday night.

One Fatema Bibi of Kasai basti in Narkendanga also went there to see what had happened and she immediately identified the child to be her grandson Ali. She informed the locals. Later, police recovered Ali and took him with them. Bibi also told the police personnel about he being her grandson.

She alleged that a few months ago her daughter-in-law Mumtaz cut off her son Tanvir's ear with the help of her paternal family. Hearing about Mumtaz, police went to her home and found her to be absconding. Having no other way out, Ali was given to Bibi to take care for the night. On Saturday afternoon, police traced out Mumtaz and brought her to Narkeldanga Police Station.

Bibi was also called with Ali. Ali was later handed over to Mumtaz. Police also warned Mumtaz and told her not to do any such act in future.

Sources informed that Tanvir had lodged a complaint after Mumtaz cut off his ear. She said despite Tanvir promised to withdraw the case, he did not till date. She questioned if she is punished what would her son do. However, Tanvir has refused to accept her statement. He also alleged that Mumtaz tried to murder him a few months ago and is now after his son. As no complaint was lodged, police handed over nine-month-old Ali to Mumtaz later on Saturday night.
