Darjeeling: Top brass of the Northern Frontier Railway departed for Darjeeling on Monday from NJP, to hold a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday over the Sevok-Rongpu (Sikkim) railway link, to connect Sikkim to the railway network of the country.
Incidentally, the CM is in Darjeeling to inaugurate a two-day-long Hill Business Summit. Nilesh Kishore Prasad, GM (constructions), NF Railways, who is leading the team, stated that there is an impasse over land allocation for the Sevok-Rongpu railway link.
"We will sit in a meeting with the CM in Darjeeling over this issue. Though the Sevok-Rongpu link has been given a go-ahead and funds allocated, work has not started owing to the land impasse," stated Prasad. During Mamata Banerjee's tenure as the Railway minister, this railway link was given a go-ahead. Foundation stone for the project was laid on October 30, 2009.
The railway link covers a distance of 45 km. Out of this 45 km stretch, 41.58 km will run through the state of West Bengal. Around Rs 13,500 crore has been sanctioned for the project.
In the past, the Railways had written to Bengal government for the allocation of land for the project.
