In a tragic incident, a 60-year-old man, who was on his way to his relative's house to invite them for his daughter's marriage, met with an accident and was declared brought dead by the hospital.
The incident happened at Jamuria in Asansol on Thursday morning. The victim, Ashoke Majhi was going to one of his relative's house to invite them on the occasion of his daughter's marriage scheduled on next Monday on his own bicycle. When he was crossing Churulia area, a loaded tractor hit him from behind. The local residents rushed to the spot and took the victim to the hospital but he was pronounced brought dead by the doctors. The accused tractor had fled from the spot immediately after the incident.
The local residents alleged that the tractor was carrying coal illegally extracted from the mines. They also alleged that the tractors are used to transport illegal coal from one place to another.
The tractors loaded with coal often ply at a top speed in the locality resulting in road accidents, alleged the local residents. They alleged that a racket has been operating in the area but the police failed to take any effective steps to book the accused involved in illegally dealing in coal. The local people staged a demonstration and blocked theb Charulia-Anandapur Road protesting against the incident.
Police later reached the spot to lift the roadblock. The demonstrators demanded compensation for the victim's family members. They also urged the police to take action against the coal mining racket illegally operating in the area. They also alleged that the illegal coal mining and the transportation was done at broad daylight. Other than tractors, dumpers are also used to take coal from one place to another.
The roadblock was lifted after senior police officers assured the local residents that steps would be taken against the accused involved in such business.
