Police have arrested three persons for their alleged involvement in ransacking of a portion of the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) which occurred on Wednesday.
After going through the CCTV footages of the hospital, police identified the accused. After conducting raids at various areas, they arrested the three accused from Ekbalpore area while some others are still at large.
The arrested culprits have been identified as Rakesh Dhanuk, Jiauddin Seikh and Seikh Sonu. They have been slapped with non-bailable charges and booked under Section 147, 148, 149, 323,324, 506 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code.
The situation at the hospital was far from normal on Thursday morning, as the outpatient department (OPD) was not functioning properly, resulting in inconvenience to the patients and their relatives coming to the hospital for treatment from various parts of the state and outside.
Many of the patients were denied treatment at the hospital and normalcy is yet to be restored.
Patients who came to the OPD to visit doctors were told by the hospital staff members that it would remain closed and advised them to return home.
Moreover, some patients who came to the hospital for collecting clinical reports also had to return empty-handed.
The hospital authorities kept the gate closed at the Ekbalpore side as the hospital staff members were recovering from the shock that they had undergone on Wednesday, following the death of a girl patient whose family members and some local people ransacked a portion of the hospital alleging medical negligence.
It is to be recalled that a mob had gone ona rampage and ransacked a portion of CMRI Hospital at Ekbalpore, following the death of a patient Sayeka Parveen (14) on Wednesday morning.
The family members of the victim damaged a portion of the hospital, alleging medical negligence behind the girl's death.
Some of the staff members and junior doctors of the hospital were beaten up. It was alleged that the police failed to take any steps to stop the violence.
A senior police officer said that they would look into the allegation of police inaction in connection with the incident.
