Soon, Bidhannagar cops to use radar speed guns

Bidhannagar City Police decided to install 'radar speed gun' on different roads of the city to measure the speed of the running vehicles. Following the increasing incidents of road accident at Salt Lake, the police have already installed traffic signals in most of the roads which were free of traffic signals.

Although some residents of the posh city expressed their reluctance over installing frequent traffic signals in roads, the city police believed that it was really needed for Salt Lake roads.

It was decided to fix speed limits for the vehicle. Trucks will be limited to 30 km per hour, the buses and auto-rickshaws will be limited to 35 km per hour and the private cars will be limited to 40 km per hour.

Signages were put up on the road dividers mentioning the speed limit for every individual type of vehicles. The policemen were seen operating the radar speed guns to take down measurement.

"Speed guns have been installed on the roads. We've also set the speed limits. The system has been successfully running for last three months," said DC (headquarters) Sudhakar.

The new signals and speed guns are effectively working to curb rash driving, Sudhakar further said. It should be recalled that there are many cases of road accidents claiming the lives of several people in Salt Lake.

A professor died in a road accident at Salt Lake a few months ago. His car rammed into a pillar of ongoing Metro project. The professor, who was driving the car, received injuries on his head and chest. Later, he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Police learnt that Dibyendu Paul, a Calcutta University professor, was driving the car at a high speed, when it suddenly lost control,
police informed. One of the front tyres burst and the car then lost control and rammed into a pillar erected in road divider.

In another recent incident, a private car mowed down two persons at Salt Lake Sector V on Saturday morning. Police said, the speeding car was coming from New Town, hit two persons on the road, but could not escape from there. Local people caught the accused driver.

He was initially beaten up and handed to the cops of Bidhannagar Electronics Complex Police station. The injured persons were taken to Bidhannagar Sub Divisional Hospital.

A major road accident incident happened near City Centre when a private bus hit a speeding auto rickshaw a few months ago. Two passengers who were inside the auto died there on the spot.

The police then revamped the traffic management in the city. More traffic signals were installed in the roads. The accident prone roads were identified. The incidents of rash driving which was increasing, has been curbed now, police believe.
