Govt instructs departments to resolve pending court cases

The state government has instructed its various departments to solve the pending cases against them in Calcutta
High Court and in various lower courts in the state.

It was learnt that altogether around 29,000 cases have been pending against various government departments at various courts. The state government has issued a notice to all the departments instructing them to solve the pending cases as soon as possible. The departments have to spend a huge amount of money every year to battle various cases pending against them. As a result, this has affected the state's exchequer to the tune of few lakhs of rupees.

It has often been seen that the cases are often delayed due to the non-availability of dates of the lawyers. Sometimes, it has been noticed that the party does not turn up before the court on the day of hearing as a result of which the various departments have to bear the costs for the cases due to the delay. In a recent meeting, it was observed that a huge amount from the state exchequers is spent to run the cases.

This huge amount of money could be used for various development works undertaken by the state government.

It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee time and again has pointedout that the Centre has been taking away a huge amount of money from the state exchequer. The move was initiated so that the amount spent for running various legal cases could be utilised for the development work.
