On-duty cop tries to kill self in Malda

An on-duty police officer attempted suicide inside the police barrack in Malda. The victim is fighting for his life at Malda Medical College and Hospital after suffering a bullet injury on his chest.

Police said that the victim, Paresh Roy, an Assistant Sub-Inspector at the Bhutni police station in Malda attempted suicide by his service revolver inside the police barrack. Roy is originally a resident of Dakshin Dinajpur. He used to live in the police barrack. Roy was recently promoted and transferred to Bhutni police station.

Another ASI of the same police station Upendranath Tiwary also used to live in the same room with the victim. But, Tiwary is currently on leave.

The victim was once the personal security guard of the then MLA of Gajol, Sushil Roy. He was transferred to district police line after the defeat of Roy in the last Assembly election. He was promoted to the post of ASI from the post of constable one and half year ago.

On Tuesday morning, local residents and some police personnel heard the sound of firing and rushed to the spot to see the victim lying in a pool of blood on the floor. Police recovered a revolver from the floor. He was taken to Manickchawk primary health centre but was later shifted to Malda Medical College and Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Police said that the victim was supposed to go to a raid on Tuesday morning and took his service revolver from the police station. Then he went to the police barrack and shot himself. Police are yet to ascertain the cause of his suicide attempt.

Police are investigating if the victim was suffering from any mental depression. Police are examining the reason of the incident and are investigating all possible angles into the incident.

The family members of the victim alleged that Roy was repeatedly denied leave and this had led to his frustration. The victim was suffering from mental depression, his family members alleged. Doctors in the hospital said that the condition of the patient is serious.
