A member of the pro-Maoist United Students Democratic Front (USDF) in Jadavpur University was beaten up when he was putting up a poster raising allegations of molestation against fellow student Sushil Mandi, who has been missing for the past four days.
Police said Mandi – an M.Phil student and resident of Hooghly's Dhaniakhali – went missing from his hostel room on February 2 morning, following a post on a social networking site by USDF alleging him of molesting a fell student of the university.
His parents had earlier lodged a missing complaint with Jadavpur police station. On Monday, they lodged a complaint against four USDF members and the girl who had alleged him of molestation.
On Monday afternoon, a USDF member Kautav Mondal was seen putting up a poster describing how the girl was molested allegedly by Mandi.
Trouble ensued when some friends of Mandi found Mondal putting up the poster. They began beating him up and the situation was brought under control after other students intervened.
According to a section of students, the allegations raised against Mandi are false. Moreover, the victim did not lodge any complaint against him either with the police or the varsity authorities.
Instead, the allegation was raised through a post in social networking site. Mandi was said to be disturbed after finding the post, his friends claimed.
