Mystery shrouds the death of a law student whose body was recovered from the room of a private hostel here on Friday afternoon.
The body has been sent for post-mortem. The police are investing the matter. No one has been arrested so far in this connection.
The student was identified as Bibechana Darnal. She was a student of third year law at North Bengal University. She was a resident of Singmari area of Darjeeling. She used to stay in a private hospital situated close to the university.
After failing to get in touch with her, the girl's parents contacted a fellow student who stays in the room next to her. The deceased used to call up her parents quite frequently. But they did not receive any phone calls from Thursday evening. Their suspicion intensified when no call from her side came on Friday morning as well.
The friends conducted a search and peeped through a window. They found Bibechana seated on the floor with a rope around her neck which was tied with the window. They raised an alarm and informed the police immediately. Police came to the spot and began investigation. Her friends were interrogated. They told the police that they saw her last on February 1 (Wednesday) when she took part in Saraswati puja.
Jessica, one of her classmates told the police that the deceased was a student of Loreto Convent in Darjeeling. Their examination is scheduled to start on February 6. They said Bibechana was loved by all for her amiable nature. She was good in studies and took part in social functions. The police have seized her cell phones and are checking the callers' list. Senior police officers said there were no external marks of injury.
