Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will repair Strand Bank Road as Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) has not looked after its upkeep for several years, Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said on Thursday.
After completing the repair work, the KMC will put up a board giving details of the amount spent to repair it. KMC might take up repairing of the roads in Garden Reach which KoPT have not touched for years. A high-level meeting between civic officials and their counterparts' in KoPT took place in the KMC headquarters on Thursday afternoon.
It was presided over by the Mayor. They discussed on the development of Posta Bazar area which includes construction of urinals and other civic facilities.
It may be recalled Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had told the business community in Posta that the area would be developed and a state of the art market would be set up. She had gone there in connection with Chhath festival which is organised by local businessmen. She had asked local businessmen to set up a committee comprising their representatives so that development works could be carried out in consultation with them.
It may be recalled that in past 34 years, the Left Front government had not done anything to develop the area where the country's biggest wholesale market is situated.
Getting water to douse flames in case of a fire was a major problem in the area and this has been sorted out. A fire station has come up after Chatterjee took over as the minister of Fire and Emergency services department.
The Mayor alleged that KoPT had not paid corporation tax to the tunes of 800 crores. A MoU was signed between KMC and Susrut Eye Foundation on Thursday where the doctors of the institute will do free cataract surgery to poor people.
