Cops arrest main accused in 2001 Parsi woman murder case

The Kolkata Police have solved a 15-year-old murder case by arresting the prime accused in this connection on Wednesday night from Begusarai in Bihar.

In 2001, Nawaj E Wadia, an aged Parsi woman was shot dead in front of her house on RN Mukherjee Road at Central Kolkata.

The police had initiated a probe, but failed to arrest the culprit and the reason behind the murder also remained unsolved.

A recent incident in which a youth Dipak Balmiki was shot at in the city on December 27, 2016 helped the police reach the main culprit of the 15-year-old murder case.

Police had arrested one Amin alias Anish, who had supplied the firearm to a 30-year-old contract killer Sarafu, to kill Dipak.

Police subsequently arrested Sarafu on January 19. During interrogation, he confessed that he had killed Wadia in 2001 when he was only 15-year-old.

He had been working as a contract killer from 2001 and it was his first contract to kill Wadia. But he was unaware about why the contract was given to kill the woman.

Thus, the police asked him to tell the name of the person who had given him the contract.

He told the police that one Md Mohit alias Motor had engaged him to kill the woman for Rs 50,000 cash.

Police had initiated a search for Motor and came to know that in 2001, he used to sell sleepers on pavement at Park Street. He now stays somewhere in Begusarai.

A team comprising officers of the city police's detective department went to Begusarai and arrested him from his residence there on Wednesday night.

He confessed that his wife Katrina Kindo used to work in the house of Wadia who was all alone.

She had assured his wife to give all her property including the house as she had no one to look after her apart from Katrina.

Motor, however, became impatient and decided to kill Wadia to grab the property as early as possible.

His plan was to sell out the house after killing Wadia to make fast money. But apprehending arrest he had fled to Begusarai along with his wife soon after the murder.
