A 50-year-old West Bengal Civil Services officer committed suicide by hanging himself in a room of his Survey Park residence on Thursday afternoon.
Though the police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the suicide, they suspect that the victim Amit Roy had taken the step after an altercation with his wife over studies of their only daughter.
Police said that Roy was posted at West Bengal Co-operative Society in Howrah.
A police officer said that there was no one in the house in the afternoon. He had locked the door of their apartment from inside and hanged himself from the ceiling.
His wife returned with his daughter in the evening and knocked on the door. After she failed to get a response from her husband, she sought the help of some locals, who soon informed the police. Police reached the spot, entered Roy's house and brought down his body. They have sent the body for autopsy.
In another incident, the body of a 50-year-old housewife Sabita Saha was found in a pond at Netajinagar on Thursday.
Police suspect that Saha committed suicide as she had been suffering from depression. Her husband had died last week and she had been missing since Wednesday.
A police officer said that the woman had gone out of her house on the pretext of meeting neighbours. She, however, did not return. Her family members informed the police, who initiated a search for her but could not locate her.
Thursday morning, some local people saw Saha's body floating in the pond and informed the police. The police recovered her body and sent it for autopsy.
Police did not suspect any foul play behind her death.
