A day after the unrest at Shibpur in Birbhum over construction of Biswa Bangla University, the work of constructing boundary wall around the plot was carried out peacefully.
A large contingent of police was posted at the site to ensure that the law and order situation did not deteriorate when workers will construct the boundary wall.
It may be recalled that a section of villagers had pulled down a portion of the boundary wall demanding setting up of factories on the land that was procured mainly for industrialisation.
Setting up of the university is one of the dream projects of the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and she had visited the spot to inspect the progress of the construction work. The state urban development minister Firhad Hakim accompanied the Chief Minister during her visit to the place. Hakim had made the point clear on Monday saying that nothing could stop the development going on in Bengal under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Since Tuesday morning, workers were found busy constructing the boundary wall and there was no tension at all. Unlike Bhangar, the district administration has tackled the situation at Shibpur in Birbhum tactfully. On one hand, a large contingent of police was posted to ensure peace while on the other hand the district administration and local bodies had discussion with the villagers who agitated on Monday. The local people were made aware about the project and they were also told how setting up of the university will help in further development of the area.
Officers of the Intelligence Bureau received information about instigation which created a chaotic situation so that the ongoing work gets stalled. Thus, immediate steps were taken to check villagers from getting swayed away by some misinformation they have been fed with by some outsiders as it had earlier happened in Bhangar.
Thus the administration and the police are keeping a close watch to assess whether there are any possibilities of trouble in any sites of the projects taken up by the state government.
