In a case of robbery, four men were arrested in North 24 Parganas' Nimta on Tuesday. The accused had assembled to loot a trader's house in the wee hours of the day when the cops nabbed them.
"Four of them were carrying firearms. They are frequent in the area and are also involved in similar cases of theft. Their game came to an end when a jeep which was patrolling in the area caught them. Valuable worth Rs 30 lakh has been recovered so far," said a police officer.
While surfing through the records of the gang, cops found out that all of them were involved in many such cases. In one of the case, they had looted gold worth Rs 20 lakh from a jewellery shop in Kestopur. The robbery was well planned because all the CC TV cameras of the shop were completely destroyed using bamboo rods.
But, the cops refused to reveal the names of the robbers. The investigating officer in the case said: "The gang has been responsible for looting around 12 shops in the Nimta area. The modus operandi now stands clear to us."
Referring to an earlier case of gold shop robbery, the officer said that the men used to visit the shop in the guise of customers. "We suspect that some of the shop's workers are involved in the crime. We will disclose every detail after the investigation comes to a rest," the officer added.
On this note, it is to be remembered that four jewellery shops were looted some two years back in Kestopur. But, the cops were successful in nabbing the two men related to the case. "All those who were arrested before and now belong to the same gang," the officer added.
