Fire breaks out at in Munshibazar godown

Fire broke out at a godown in Kolkata's Munshibazar on Sunday afternoon. Fifteen fire tenders rushed to the spot to douse the flame. The fire fighters took almost three hours to control the situation. However, the fire brigade lodged complaint with the Entally police station that no fire safety precautions were maintained in the godown. Police are now looking for the owner of the godown.

It was at around 3 pm when the local residents witnessed the flame and smoke coming out from the godown. The fire fighters evacuated the congested area. The officers of the fire brigade said, drums of paint, which is used for wall painting, were stocked there. The paint promptly caught on fire. However, many people alleged that fire brigade arrived there late.

In another incident, some shops were gutted just adjacent to Narendrapur Railway station. The fire broke out on Friday night. The local residents helped the fire fighters douse the flame within two hours. Four fire tenders extinguished the fire, but they could not save the shops. "We suspect a conspiracy behind this fire. Some people tried to destroy those shops to vacate the land. We'll ask the police to probe the incident," said a shopkeeper whose shop was gutted.

In another incident, an explosion at a fire cracker factory at Egra of East Midnapore led the injuries for three laborers late on Saturday. The injured were taken to a local hospital. Police said that some people were illegally making fire crackers.

"They were illegally running the factory as they do not have the necessary approvals. On Saturday night, the local residents heard a cracking sound. They rushed there only to witness that fire had already gutted the factory. The workers were found running towards a pond," said a police officer.

It should be recalled that fire broke out in a bag shop at Mahatma Gandhi Road, just beside Purabi Cinema Hall last Sunday afternoon. The fire fighters faced a tough situation to douse the flame as the area was congested even on a Sunday afternoon as the lanes were narrow.

On Wednesday, fire had broken out at a multi storey building on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai road on triggering panic in the area.

Police said that a garments factory is situated on the ground floor of the building. The incident had spread tension as a school is also situated in the same building. Two employees of the godown were injured in the incident and they were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Local people spotted smoke billowing out of the go-down where various garments were being stocked. The area was soon covered in black smoke and people started running from one place to another. People working at various offices located in the building started panicking and left the building. The school was in session when the fire broke out at around 10.45 am on Wednesday. After being informed, the fire brigade officials rushed to the spot and the five fire-tenders were pressed into action to douse the flame. Police cordoned off the entire area following the incident.
