Student, pregnant woman killed in separate accidents

Tension ran high at Maniktala on late Saturday night following a road accident. The local residents put a block on the Maniktala main road after a first year college student was killed in the accident.

Tension prevailed in the area on Sunday morning as well. The local people said that the victim Vineet Chauhan (19) who was riding his motorcycle was crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus after he fell on the road after being hit by a car. The victim was a local resident and was returning home when the accident took place.

The local people rescued the injured victim and took him to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. Both the bus and the car drivers fled the spot after the accident. Police are yet to arrest the accused drivers and trace the killer vehicle. Police are examining the CCTV footage to identify the vehicles.

The local people put up a roadblock. A scuffle broke out between the police and the agitators. Police tried to convince the people but they refused the lift the block. The protestors demanded the immediate arrest of the killer vehicle's driver. Having found no option, police had to resort to the lathicharge to disperse the mob. Some local residents were injured in the incident. Minister Sadhan Pande visited the spot on Sunday morning and assured that compensation would be given the owner whose stalls were damaged due to public wrath.

Irate mob ransacked a local road side stall after its owner failed to provide the detailed account of the accident. The situation was later brought under control by the police. Police are conducting raids to nab the driver of the bus that had crushed the victim to the death.

In another incident, a 22 year old expectant mother died while two of her relatives were injured when the ambulance carrying the woman to the Malda Medical College lost control and hit a road side tree on its way.
