Owner roughed up over pet dog's incessant barking

A youth was arrested on Friday on charges of beating up his neighbour. The youth was protesting against the barking of a dog belonging to the victim. The incident took place at Ballygunge on Thursday.

Police said the accused Avijit Sen was arrested from his house on the basis of the complaint lodged by his neighbour Mukund Khaitan.

Khaitan's residence is at 4 Queens Park and the accused's house is situated on the adjacent plot that is 4B Queens Park. Khaitan lodged a complaint alleging that Sen had come out of his house with a small iron rod and approached him protesting against barking of a dog in his house. When they were engaged in heated exchange of words, Sen suddenly hit him on his head with the iron rod. He fell on the road with blood coming out profusely from his head.

On Friday, the accused was produced before the Alipore Court and he was remanded in the custody of the police for one day. The police took him in their custody to find out the iron rod with which he had hit Khaitan on his head.

Sen's counsel submitted before the court that the accused didn't hit Khaitan on his head. Instead, he received an injury when he fell on the road during a scuffle between them and it was unintentional.

Meanwhile, bodies of 22 stray dogs were found in a locality near Kanch Mandit at Baranagar which is the bordering area of Kolkata and North 24-Parganas. Local people alleged that some miscreants have poisoned the dogs to death as they used to restrict them from committing theft in the area.

The local people demanded a proper probe into the incident claiming that the police should be aware as this could be an indication of a major crime that might take place in the area.
