New Town lawyer's death: Mystery deepens as wife admits to murder
Kolkata: New Town police station has arrested Calcutta High Court lawyer Rajat Kumar Dey's wife Anindita Pal Dey, for allegedly murdering her husband. Sleuths claimed that Anindita has admitted to committing the murder. She was remanded to 8 days police remand by Barasat Court on Sunday.
Anindita was arrested late on Saturday night. Sources informed that on Saturday morning, she was detained. During interrogation, she allegedly kept changing her statement before the police officers. Sleuths claimed that late on Saturday night, Anindita finally admitted that she had killed her husband Rajat.
Though police are not saying anything more regarding Anindita's statement, sources informed she stated that a mobile phone's charger cord was used for Rajat's murder.
"Several ambiguities were there in Anindita's statement. Due to repeated contradictory statements, she was arrested. Later, she admitted that she had committed the murder," said Avaru Rabindranath, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Detective Department (DD) of Bidhannagar Police.
Police have also seized Anindita's mobile phone and laptop for further enquiry. Sources informed that on November 24, an altercation took place between Rajat and Anindita over a doubt that she had an illicit affair with someone.
Anindita claimed that during the altercation, Rajat threatened to commit suicide using the bedsheet. Later, she used a mobile phone charger cord to strangulate Rajat. But sleuths are not believing the statement.
Anindita was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Barasat. Public Prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee appealed for 10 days police remand but the court granted 8 days. "There were several contradictions in Anindita's statement. Later, she admitted that she had killed Rajat. We appealed for police remand as further details regarding the case are yet to be revealed," said Chatterjee.
Rajat was found dead inside a room in his flat at DB 97 in New Town. Anindita had initially claimed that he had died due to cardiac arrest. But after the autopsy examination, it became known that Rajat had died due to strangulation. When Anindita was interrogated further, she changed her previous statement and claimed that Rajat had committed suicide.
Thus, doubt grew within the investigating officers of New Town police station. To find out the truth, sleuths continuously interrogated Anindita. During interrogation, Anindita's version differed from her earlier statements.
She also stated that she had tried to hide the suicide due to fear. She was also asked why their son and a pet were shifted to her maternal house a day before the incident. As she had no clear answer, sleuths decided to arrest her.
