MP Shanta Chhetri tables pvt member's bill for Darjeeling Sports University

Siliguri: Shanta Chhetri, Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha,) on Friday tabled a private member's bill for the constitution of a Darjeeling Sports University.
The Darjeeling Sports University Bill 2022 seeks to establish a sports university in West Bengal. The aim of the university is to impart professional training to promote sports education and management.
The "Statement of Objects and Reasons" of the Bill states that "the inhabitants of Darjeeling Hills are bestowed with great physical strength and remarkable sporting abilities. The sporting talent of the region has been going to waste due to lack of training, guidance, knowledge and opportunity."
"If properly channelised, the potential can win laurels for the nation," stated the Bill.
The Darjeeling Sports University will be a full-fledged sports university. It will provide a congenial sporting environment to nurture the entire Eastern region along with local talents for national and international sports competitions.
The University will focus on subjects, including sports science, technology, sports management and high-performance training. It will focus on creating high standard infrastructure for the development of sports sciences and training of athletes apart from providing Bachelor's degrees, Master's degrees and research facilities in other areas related to sports.
The University will address issues relating to various disciplines of great importance at international levels, including adventure and disability sports.
"The Bill, if passed will be one of the biggest contributions for Darjeeling Hills. A sports university will open a plethora of opportunities for our Hill people," stated Chhetri.
