More rain in the offing from next week, says weather office

Kolkata: The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore on Saturday predicted heavy showers from Monday as the Monsoon has become active following the formation of a low-pressure trough over the Bay of Bengal.

The low-pressure trough had, however, moved towards the Western direction a couple of days ago but it left the Monsoon axis active in the region. A combination of the low-pressure trough and the Monsoon brought moderate to heavy rainfall in all the South Bengal districts including the city in the past few days.

The weather prediction says that the Monsoon has further intensified and would bring more rainfall in South Bengal early next week. It is expected that the city will also receive moderate to heavy rainfall from Monday.

A moderate to heavy shower in South Bengal in the past few days has brought the rain deficit down. The rain deficit remained around 50 percent before the showers lashed various South Bengal districts including Kolkata. The deficit has gone down to around 40 percent in South Bengal whereas the figure in the state is around 29 percent.

However, there is no deficit in rainfall in the North Bengal region currently. The coastal districts may receive maximum rainfall due to the impact of the Monsoon next week. It is presumed that more rainfall in South Bengal districts next week will further pull down the rain deficit figure.

The weather prediction comes as good news for the farmers who faced difficulties in cultivating crops due to a scarcity in rainfall during the current Monsoon season.

There were considerable deficits of rainfall in two consecutive months of June and July. The Monsoon had its advent in the state a few months ago but there was no adequate rainfall in the last two months. The situation has improved in the current month so far and also provided a favourable atmosphere for the cultivators. The rest of the month will receive more rainfall, predicts the MeT office.

Incidentally, it may be mentioned here that Kolkata and other South Bengal districts received scattered rainfall on Saturday.
